Hampshire’s relationship with its varied landscape goes back hundreds of years and agriculture and food production has always played a big part across local communities and contributed to the locale economy.

The diversity of the local landscape includes heathland and ancient wealds, coasts and forests, valley and rivers, which allow for a fantastic array of produce to be grown and raised across Hampshire.

Take a peek into the county’s food heritage and it will reveal strawberries, watercress, wheat, hops, sea salt, mackerel, trout, vines, honey, pigs and sheep. Today, some of this produce is still lovingly cultivated by local producers – Hampshire watercress, trout from the chalk stream rivers and strawberries in abundance.

Across our glorious county, you will find talented innovative local makers, growers, producers and crafters – from traditional butchers and charcuterie, to craft beer, local cheesemakers, artisan bakers and PYO fruit farm. One of the ways to find out more about the taste of Hampshire is to explore The Hampshire Farmers Markets (HFM).

For many years our Hampshire Farmers Markets have been a feature of our local towns and market squares including Alton and Petersfield. These monthly events are popular with local residents and rely on local support.

The good news is that as we emerge out of lockdown, the outdoor markets are returning with social distancing and Covid precautions in place, to make sure you can relax and enjoy browsing among the different market stalls.

After tough times for local business and producers, they need our support more than ever, so why not check out what your local farmers market has to offer from fishcakes to fudge – there’s something to suit everyone’s palette.
